"...Ash sat beside her, pack upended, all its contents splayed in front of her, melarne in her lap. A tranquil melody washed over Dawn, soothing her fraying nerves. Dawn looked over and watched the veins dance along the surface of Ash’s right hand as the bones moved mechanically beneath the skin, pulling the rhythm from the strings. Her left hand slid across the neck, nimble fingers gliding from chord to chord. At some point she’d painted her nails, but all that was left were a few flecks of glittering blue.
" 'It’s cold,' Dawn said. Her voice came out dry, like sheets of paper dragged across a chalkboard covered in sand. She coughed a little.
"Ash looked at her, the friendly twinkle in her deep brown eyes making Dawn forget all her troubles, for just a moment. She was safe..."
